Description: This image shows the insides of the Ohio Caverns near West Liberty. In 1897, a farm boy investigating the disappearance of water into a sinkhole in a nearby field discovered this system of subterranean passageways. Digging down a few feet, he found an opening to a cave that had begun forming perhaps several thousand years earlier during the Ice Age in soluble limestone bedrock that was approximately 400 million years old. Ground water dripping down from the cavern's ceiling continues to form stalactites, stalagmites, and mineral coatings on the cavern's walls, floor, and ceiling. A portion of Ohio Caverns near the discovery site was opened to the public in 1897, but that section closed in 1925 when a more extensive and geologically interesting part of the cave was discovered. Description: Indian Lake in Logan County, Ohio, ca. 1940-1949. Indian Lake was built between 1850 and 1857 as a feeder lake for the Miami and Erie Canal. It was known as Lewistown Reservoir until 1896, when the lake was purchased by the state of Ohio for a state park. In the 1920s, S. L. Wilgus built an amusement park on the shore of the lake near Russell's Point. Attractions included a boardwalk along the lake and a roller coaster. The park closed in the 1970s. View on Ohio Memory.

On the photograph's far left and right are men who are documenting the event with a still camera and what appears to be a film camera. The marker reads: "Oldest concrete street in America. America's first concrete streets were those which surrounded this court house. Concrete was first used in 1891 to provide an 8-foot strip along Main Street where horses were hitched. Two years later Court Avenue was paved with concrete made from native marl supplies by the Buckeye Cement Company, 8 miles to the northeast. Description: This photograph of the Logan Elm tree in Pickaway County, Ohio was taken ca. 1918. The Logan Elm, according to local legend, was the location of a speech on Indian and white relations given by Chief Logan of the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe in 1774. Known as "Logan's Lament," the speech included his grievances over the white settlers' betrayal and murder of his family and tribesmen. When the tree died in 1964, it was estimated to be between 200 and 300 years old, and was approximately 24 feet in circumference. In its place, the Ohio Historical Society and Pickaway Country placed a plaque, and, recently, the Society planted a pin oak tree in honor of Chief Logan and the legendary elm tree.
